Introduction

With winter weather on the way, it's important to take extra good care of your shoes. We'd love to share three tips on how you can quickly and easily prepare your shoes for winter with just a few simple steps.

Tip 1.

Regular maintenance

Regularly shine your shoes to care for and protect them optimally. The products from Saphir Médaille d'Or contain beeswax and other types of mineral and natural waxes to protect your leather shoes. Feel free to use a little extra Pate de Luxe wax during the winter months to waterproof your shoes. Want to protect your suede and nubuck shoes? Then use a spray like Saphir Médaille d'Or natural protector spray. Also, check out our suede guide for more information.

Tip 2.

Waterproof your leather soles

Protect your leather soles with Sole Guard from Saphir Médaille d'Or. By treating your leather soles with this natural oil, moisture has no chance to seep into the soles. This prevents your soles from drying out and wearing down faster, while also keeping your feet dry.

Tip 3.

Use a pair of shoe trees

Coming home after a rainy day? Make sure to put a pair of cedarwood shoe trees in your shoes. Shoe trees made of untreated cedarwood absorb moisture very well, drawing it into the shoe tree instead of the leather. This prevents the leather from drying out and helps avoid potential damage caused by salt and dirt in the rainwater.

Concluding

In the end, it's always better not to wear your quality leather shoes in the rain. As shoe care experts, we’ve personally seen what rainwater (sometimes combined with road salt) can do to a good pair of shoes. Discoloration can often be masked with shoe cream, but sometimes the leather becomes uneven because it soaks up too much water. This essentially affects the leather's structure. In such cases, there's unfortunately little you can do other than try to make the damage blend in by recoloring it. Do you have white moisture or salt stains on your leather? Then check out our guide on water stains.
